The Things We Leave Behind

I reached for you in the endless night,

A fading soul, a fragment of light,

You slipped like stardust through my hands,

Like footprints swallowed by the shifting sands.

Beneath my feet, the waters wept,

And mourned the secrets that we kept.

The stars above failed to shine,

As your fading heartbeat echoed through mine.

I tried to hold what could not stay,

To gather the pieces that drifted away.

But the harder I clung, the less I knew,

If I was saving myself or losing you.

And when the last of your light was truly gone,

I stood in the dark, numb yet holding on,

For even when the mind forgets,

The heart remembers what it could never get.

So, I let you scatter, I set you free,

A thousand small stars in a fathomless sea.

And though the darkness has swallowed the blue,

A part of me will always reach for you.
