An Endless Game Of UNO

“UNO CATCH”

“NOT AGAIN”

That’s a snippet of a repeated two lines you would have heard between me, my mum, and my sister, when yesterday, we played a 40-minute game of UNO. It was so long, we had to replenish the draw pile two times.

It all started when I took out the pack of UNO.

For some reason, for the past few days, we had been playing UNO on repeat, simply because sometimes, we just had nothing better to do. Today was no different, especially as during the holidays, there was plenty of free time to spare. Besides, annoying my mum seemed like a lucrative activity too😊.

Thus, we began. After arguing about who would begin for a grand total of 10 minutes, which involved plenty of screaming, re-shuffling of cards, yelling at people to stop cheating and so on, we finally started playing.

About 15 minutes into the game, we came to a standstill. No one had the colour sitting there benignly on the pile, Em kept secretively drawing cards from the draw pile after looking at them, shirking her duties to pick up cards when she was hit with power ones. A plus-five? Nope, for her, that’s a plus-one.

☹.

And it kept going and going. I’ll give you a look into the chaos that unfolded.

Mum: EM STOP THROWING THE CARDS AROUND.

Me: Ahhhhhhhhh, I HAVE 3 FLIP CARDS, SOMEONE HELP.

Em: *consistently barking*

Me: *in utter confusion as to what is transpiring*

Em: *begins kissing every card*

Me: *in utter disgust*

Mum: *rolling her eyes in exasperation*

Mum: SOMEONE PUT DOWN A CARD.

Me: *unable to formulate words because I was too busy rolling on the floor in laughter*

Mum: *toad face*

Em: *lAlAlAlA, I’m GONNA EAT A CARD*

Me: YOU CHEATING MONKEY. SIT DOWN AND PUT DOWN A CARD *bursts into laughter again*

About 20 minutes later…

Mum: SOMEONE END THIS GAME, I HAVE WORK.

Em: NO MUMMA STAY HERE.

Em: *tries to pull Mum back and falls on the floor. Meanwhile, Mum hides her cards, saying she’s got none left*

Me: *facepalming so hard I left a mark on my forehead*

Dad: *walks into a scene of utter catastrophe, looks at me on the floor, mum trying to dislodge her arm from Em’s grasp, Em flying around because she can’t hold her ground, and walks back out*

I promise you, it was Netflix-worthy.

However, that made me realise that it’s little moments like this that make life so colourful. Spending time with your family is such an important part of you. Additionally, while having fun, in a way, you’re building strategies(whether cheating’s one or not, EM), building teamwork and for that moment of time, experiencing complete joy, frustration and euphoria all at the same time. How strange that a simple card game could catalyse so many emotions at once.

Now, before I go into a psychological spiral like when my dad does when he ruminates on life, I’m going to go play another round of UNO.

😉.

“HEY, STOP LOOKING AT MY CARDS.”
