Oh 2024, what a wonderful time,
An amalgamation of scares, fails and sleepless nights,
From AI blunders to political gaffes,
You had us all rolling in utter delight.
January kicked off with a spark, the stuff of workout dreams,
“New year, new me!” or so it seemed,
By February, resolutions were defenestrated and gone,
Bingeing Netflix shows and devouring food had clearly won.
February brought romance, or so we thought,
Valentine(and Galentine’s ads)that brought nothing to a girl who didn’t know a lot,
Cupid aimed arrows, but with shaky precision,
Leading to some very…questionable? decisions.
March came roaring with exams dissolving us in endless pain,
But Temu shopping deals were driving us insane,
Cheap clothes, charms and gadgets galore,
Who needs to studiously save when there’s always, disastrously, “buy more?”
April brought pranks that were utterly grand,
A “UFO landing” had us all aghast,
And then came ChatGPT’s surprise feat,
Writing songs that Taylor Swift couldn’t beat(while she raked in $2 billion from the Eras’ Tour admirable feats).
By May, the world seemed greener and bright,
As billionaires clashed in a spaceflight fight,
“Who’ll colonise Mars?”, they leered with a smirk,
Meanwhile, us lowly Earthlings just ran back to work.
June saw sports at their absolute peak,
Where a referee’s blunder could spark a week,
Of memes so utterly strange yet divine,
It made VAR calls seem publicly fine.
In July, it was heatwaves galore,
Global warming knocking on every door, but ours,
We were frozen by the winter chill,
Bundling up against the fog, what a thrill?
August was buzzing with tech on the rise,
Which subject faced a scandal? Commerce takes the prize!
While Oppenheimer’s legacy still sparked deep thought,
In 2024, AI innovation ruled the lot.
September? Almost a break in sight!
And that’s when it began to sink it, the end of junior year was a beckoning, bittersweet light,
When did we go from 14 to 15?
When did time till the end become so painfully squeezed?
October brought spooky delights to devour,
For me, it brought Durga Puja in all its glamour,
But it meant a race against the hours to prepare,
Studying in India was a possibility becoming more and more rare.
(Except to make 200-page notes for Science).
November, politics, what a debate!
American leaders did the splits to prove they’re in shape,
The polls were chaos, the campaigns intense,
Possibly funded by suspicious incense.
And then came December, the year’s closing act,
Bringing my birthday and family-packed snacks,
The holidays sparkled, the chaos paused,
And I toasted to surviving this year, with rapturous applause,
To the sound of the fireworks exploding over Darling Harbour,
We welcomed 2025 with bittersweet fervour.
(Yet, it still hasn’t sunk in.)
So, here’s to 2024, a year of surprise,
Of laughter, of growth, and an unhealthy amount of Macca’s fries,
Maybe this time, using the remaining braincells that haven’t been fried,
I’ll remember my purported resolutions for a longer period of time.
Signing off…
