- Fearless by Lauren Roberts
And here we are, back again in the world of Powerless. Twists, turns, heartbreak and a reminder that I want someone like Kai Azer in my life.
After finishing Reckless on that CRUEL cliffhanger(why, why, why) and several Reddit rabbit holes later, I finally got to read the book.
I honestly can’t believe it’s over. Fearless is the final book in the Powerless trilogy, and finishing it felt like saying goodbye to characters I’ve grown to love so much. Lauren Roberts delivered an absolutely explosive, emotional, and heartbreaking finale, with a bittersweet end.
This book picks up right where Powerless and Reckless left off, and from the very beginning, the tension is palpable. The world of Ilya is more dangerous than ever, with rebellion brewing, secrets unravelling, and characters constantly walking the line between survival and destruction. You can feel that everything has been building up to this moment, and every decision counts, especially after Kitt’s proposal at the end of Reckless(hello? Kai+Paedyn ENDGAME).
Paedyn has grown so much since the first book. She started as a girl just trying to survive in a world where being powerless meant being nothing—and she ends as someone who chooses to fight, to lead, and to love, even when it comes at a massive cost. Her strength isn’t about magical powers—it’s about how much she’s willing to risk for what’s right.
And Kai… He’s always been this mix of danger and devotion, but in Fearless, we see a version of him that’s more vulnerable and rawer. The way he and Paedyn love each other—despite everything stacked against them—was beautifully painful. Their connection isn’t perfect, but that’s what made it feel earned. Every scene between them hit hard and made you wonder, when on Earth will we finally see a happy ending? It doesn’t really hit until you read it in words and you’re convinced it’s true, and every part of their relationship had me squealing one second, cackling the next, crying the third, and wanting to hit them both over their heads with a pan over and over and over again the next second.
One of the strongest parts of this book is how it doesn’t give us a simple, happy ending. It’s messy. It’s painful. There are sacrifices. Lauren Roberts doesn’t wrap everything in a neat bow—and honestly, I think that’s what made the story feel so powerful and painful.
I also loved how the side characters had their own arcs and importance, and the world-building expanded even more in this book. The different factions, the moral grey areas, the choices that felt impossible—it all added so much depth. At times I wasn’t sure who to trust, and I think that unpredictability made it even more intense.
Kitt’s descent into insanity was incredibly hard to read, especially after remembering his bubbly, giving personality throughout Powerless. Honestly, I think his POV was the most vulnerable, because you could see glimpses of the old him, and then they’d be snatched away. Throughout, there’s this dilemma, did he deserve it or was it Paedyn’s fault? Who truly deserves that idealised happy ending?
The ending completely wrecked me—in the best and worst ways. I cried, I stared at the wall in disbelief, I double checked, ate more ramen, wondered why I didn’t delay my gratification and binge-read it in two hours and was left with an odd feeling of both happiness and sadness. It’s one of those endings that will stay with me for a long time. Now I’m just sad the series is over, so I hope I get to read many, many more books from this author.
Overall, Fearless was everything I wanted and more. If you’re into dystopian fantasy with powerful themes, unforgettable characters, and a romance that makes your heart ache in the best way, you have to read this. Just be warned: your heart will break—but it’ll be worth it.
Signing off…
